PORTSMOUTH – Portsmouth Hospitality has announced that Hearth Eatery & Bar, located at 60 Penhallow St. in Portsmouth, will permanently close on June 11, 2025.

“While we’ve been deeply grateful for the support of our community and loyal guests, the operational demands of running such a large and complex facility ultimately proved unsustainable,” said Marie Bodi, spokesperson for Portsmouth Hospitality.

As one of the largest dining venues in downtown Portsmouth, Hearth has been celebrated for its distinctive design, welcoming atmosphere, and diverse culinary offerings. “While our concept was met with enthusiasm, maintaining operations at such a scale required a large and diverse team—which became increasingly difficult to staff and sustainably support,” Bodi said.

The company expresses its deep gratitude to their loyal patrons and team members. “To our guests, thank you for your support. And to our employees—many of whom stepped up to take on multiple roles and responsibilities during challenging times—your commitment did not go unnoticed. We are immensely grateful.”

Senior staff met with all employees June 11 to offer relocation opportunities to other Portsmouth Hospitality brands, re-employment assistance, and/or severance packages.

As part of this transition, Hearth will donate any unsold food items to local charities and food banks. Hearth will provide refunds or exchanges (redeemable at other Portsmouth Hospitality restaurants) for any valid, unused gift cards.

Company officials are exploring myriad new third-party ventures.
 

Hearth Eatery & Bar’s unique design encompasses more than 20,000 square feet of exceptional, first-class restaurant cooking and dining space. With direct street access from both Daniel and Penhallow streets, as well as the Brick Market courtyard—just off Pleasant Street and historic Market Square— three takeout windows and over one hundred outdoor dining tables, chairs, and umbrellas offer passersby a glimpse into a charming water fountain feature, along with several sculptures and artworks, evoking a distinctly European ambiance.
