  • Portsmouth’s hospitality, retail and wellness communities unite for scholarship initiative supporting hospitality industry’s future

PORTSMOUTH— A grassroots movement is taking shape in downtown Portsmouth, as the city’s restaurants, retailers, and wellness businesses come together for the inaugural Hospitality Scholarship Initiative—a powerful campaign designed to fund scholarships for emerging talent in the hospitality industry.

Spearheaded by Rebecca Sacchetti, director of Sales at the One Hundred Club, the initiative aims to rally 100% participation from downtown Portsmouth restaurants, creating a strong visual and financial show of support for the future of the industry.

“This isn’t just about one business or one event—it’s about building a more sustainable future for hospitality,” said Sacchetti. “We’re calling on every restaurant, boutique, café, and wellness studio to stand together in solidarity. This community thrives when we lift each other up.”

The initiative has already garnered support from some of the Seacoast’s most respected culinary voices, including:

    • Chef Mark Segal of Fold’d Community Diner
    • Chef RJ Joyce of The Carriage House
    • Chef Lee Frank of Otis, Lee Frank’s, and most recently, reality TV’s Yes, Chef
    • Chef Andrew Swanson of Nichinan
    • Chef Evan Mallett of Black Trumpet
    • Chef Johnny Espeland of The One Hundred Club
“To see these chefs and industry leaders stepping forward so early in the process speaks volumes,” said Sacchetti. “They’re not just cooking extraordinary food—they’re shaping the future of the profession.”

In addition to hospitality leaders, the effort is being championed by the retail and wellness sectors. Candace Byrnes, owner of The DRIPBaR, has invited more than 25 local businesses to contribute to a silent and live auction supporting the scholarship fund. The auction will be a featured event at the One Hundred Club’s annual golf tournament at Wentworth by the Sea Country Club on Sept. 16, 2025.

“Whether you sell art, clothing, smoothies, or wellness and beauty—everyone in this city benefits from a thriving hospitality scene,” said Byrnes. “We all want to be part of something bigger, and this is our moment to give back.”

The Hospitality Scholarship Initiative will officially launch in early September, with more details on participating businesses, donation opportunities, and scholarship criteria to follow.

“This is Portsmouth at its best,” Sacchetti added. “Collaborative, compassionate, and committed to the long game. I couldn’t be more proud of what we’re building together.”
